Why Hurt People HURT People!
🙌 HURT PEOPLE HURT PEOPLE! 🙌
In times of stress, our thinking NARROWS.
We forget the ideals we set for ourselves. 😲
We forget the goals we were aiming to reach. 😲
We fall into thinking patterns limited to our self-preservation. 😨
But, you’re NO LESS of a person for falling back into these patterns. It happens to us all. ❤️
What matters is not that we became lost in thought (for the thousandth time), but that we continued to acknowledge the moments when they did, accepted them as they were, and continued redirecting our focus toward what truly mattered to us. ⤴️
If you’re a meditator, you know how RANDOM your thoughts can be! 🧘♂️
Especially when your mind is idle, thoughts which you do not ask for will appear in your conscious mind. It’s like a fish in a pond that pops its head on the surface of the water. 🐟
With practices like meditation, you realize you don’t have to engage with this fish. You realize it’s just one of many fish that are going to appear ALL THE TIME, and you have the freedom to allow this fish to go back underwater. 🙌
But, without us developing the skills of mindfulness and self-control, we will ALWAYS be at the mercy of grabbing the next fish that appears. We’ll continue grabbing every fish that appears and assume they all possess equal importance. 🤯
For example, it’s SO EASY in this day and age for the Fish of Outrage to appear more and more in our minds. 😅
But the problem is the more often you grab this Fish of Outrage, the more often Fishes of Outrage will appear.
Because whatever you continually focus on in the mind grows. 👀
It’s why Nietszche famously said: “He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.”
In other words, some of the most dangerous people are the ones who can only see wrongdoing in everyone else but themselves. They see themselves through a divine lens while simultaneously projecting the Fish they reject in their own minds onto other people. 👉
That’s also why there’s the saying: “When you point 1 finger, there are 3 fingers pointing back at you.”
🌟 If you are suffering, you are lost in thought. 🌟
Suffering begets suffering.
That’s why it’s important we remember:
🙌 HURT PEOPLE HURT PEOPLE! 🙌
That person you see screaming in the face of another person? 🤬
That person expressing irrational, out-of-control behavior? 🤬
That person who is vowing to get revenge? 🤬
They are ALL suffering, fear disguised as power. 😔
For my social media friends that are thirsty for condemnation and revenge, I know reading this may be a difficult concept to understand. 🤔
It may be even more difficult because this post is holding a MIRROR up to yourself. ❤️
A person who feels the need to hurt other people, to crave revenge, to watch the whole world burn, is NOT a happy person. 👍
In fact, the ones who hurt the most tend to also be the ones who need love the most. ❤️
Because:
🙌 HURT PEOPLE HURT PEOPLE! 🙌
Consider the words of Sam Harris:
“Every person you have ever met, every person you will pass in the street today, is going to die. ⚰️
Living long enough, each will suffer the loss of his friends and family. All are going to lose everything they live in this world. 😢
Why would one want to be anything but kind to them in the meantime?” ❤️
During times of stress, these ideas I’m sharing likely WON’T be at the forefront of your mind. 👍
That’s why it’s our job to work on ourselves, to develop ourselves, and to continually increase our self-awareness. 👀
Because the work we do on ourselves now is NOT just about us. It’s also about everyone around us who’s going to benefit from it. 🌎
When you take care of yourself, you can better take care of others. ❤️
When you’re loving to yourself, you can be more loving to others. ❤️
When you’re forgiving to yourself, you can be more forgiving to others. ❤️
As within, so without. ↔️
So, the next time you THINK about grabbing that Fish of Outrage in the mind, remember:
🙌 HURT PEOPLE HURT PEOPLE! 🙌
Will you be a part of breaking the cycle of suffering? 🙌
As Martin Luther King Jr. beautifully said: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” ❤️
