One thing 2 people can easily get caught up in is an argument. And Iโ€™m not talking about an argument where both sides share their perspectives in a respectful and open manner.

(This is the Internet after all! ๐Ÿ˜‰)

I mean an argument where it becomes less about exchanging ideas and more about wanting to be โ€œrightโ€. It becomes less about truth-seeking and more about egoic dominance over the other person.

Why do we do this? Iโ€™ll give you one reason.

๐ŸŒŸ The ideas we share feel like part of our identity. So when our ideas our challenged it feels like our identity is challenged. ๐ŸŒŸ

Being โ€œwrongโ€ feels uncomfortable because when weโ€™re so attached to our beliefs a argument can feel more like a personal attack, rather than a simple disagreement about our beliefs. ๐Ÿ˜จ

Say youโ€™re an advocate for the environment, and you wholeheartedly believe that what youโ€™re doing is helping it. ๐ŸŒฑ

But then say someone comes along who disagrees with you. Say they present a new perspective, one which argues the very things youโ€™re doing is actually hurting the environment more than it is helping it. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

But instead of hearing their points, you jump on the defense! You tune out the things they are saying. โ€œThatโ€™s ridiculous! Iโ€™ve been doing this for years! They just donโ€™t know what theyโ€™re talking about!โ€ ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Whether they had a valid point or not didnโ€™t matter. You shut yourself off from hearing what they had to say. Because it was more comfortable sticking with what you WANTED to believe rather than what might ACTUALLY be true. โŒ

Ignorance can indeed be bliss. ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐ŸŒŸ Being open to being โ€œwrongโ€ can feel uncomfortable. But it may also lead to learning something new. ๐ŸŒŸ
