Why We Hold Beliefs TIGHT!
โ๐๐ถ๐ผโ๐น๐ฌ ๐พ๐น๐ถ๐ต๐ฎ! ๐ท๐ฌ๐น๐ฐ๐ถ๐ซ!โ ๐คฌ
One thing 2 people can easily get caught up in is an argument. And Iโm not talking about an argument where both sides share their perspectives in a respectful and open manner.
(This is the Internet after all! ๐)
I mean an argument where it becomes less about exchanging ideas and more about wanting to be โrightโ. It becomes less about truth-seeking and more about egoic dominance over the other person.
Why do we do this? Iโll give you one reason.
๐ The ideas we share feel like part of our identity. So when our ideas our challenged it feels like our identity is challenged. ๐
Being โwrongโ feels uncomfortable because when weโre so attached to our beliefs a argument can feel more like a personal attack, rather than a simple disagreement about our beliefs. ๐จ
Say youโre an advocate for the environment, and you wholeheartedly believe that what youโre doing is helping it. ๐ฑ
But then say someone comes along who disagrees with you. Say they present a new perspective, one which argues the very things youโre doing is actually hurting the environment more than it is helping it. ๐ฒ
But instead of hearing their points, you jump on the defense! You tune out the things they are saying. โThatโs ridiculous! Iโve been doing this for years! They just donโt know what theyโre talking about!โ ๐ฃ๏ธ
Whether they had a valid point or not didnโt matter. You shut yourself off from hearing what they had to say. Because it was more comfortable sticking with what you WANTED to believe rather than what might ACTUALLY be true. โ
Ignorance can indeed be bliss. ๐
๐ Being open to being โwrongโ can feel uncomfortable. But it may also lead to learning something new. ๐
