Why “YOLO” Has A Point!

🤘 “𝘠𝘖𝘓𝘖!” 🤘

I’m sure you’ve heard this term before. It used to be a common hashtag on social media: #YOLO.

I also used to hear it when I was in high school but more often as a joke than anything taken seriously. It was the phrase a classmate might use when they were about to do something really stupid. It was the phrase a person might use as an excuse for someone else’s reckless behavior. 🥴

For those not informed, YOLO is initials for: “𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘖𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘖𝘯𝘤𝘦.”

As someone who has used this phrase before in a stupid and absurd way, I typically don’t think much of it. But when I think about it now, underneath this phrase does lay an simple yet important point. If you take away the most common associations to this term, you get those basic 4 words. It’s simply sharing a fundamental truth.

As much as we can know for sure, we only have this 1 life to live. 🙌

How are we spending it? Are we keeping ourselves sheltered? Are we taking the time to do things that really matter to us? Are we giving ourselves enough permission to experience this journey called Life? 🤔

While I’ll never be a person to encourage dangerous behavior, I will be a person to remind you that “YOLO” is, in fact, an important truth. 🙌

It’s not a requirement that a person be idiotic and reckless in order to live life to the fullest. A person can live life to the fullest AND minimize the amount of years off their life because of careless activities. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. 👍

We can become more aware of our mortality now or wait for a painful moment when life forces this reminder onto us. Death doesn’t have to be seen as a negative; it can be our biggest driver to experience life more fully. We can see it as the darkest void or as our greatest messenger: “If not now, when?” ❤️
